The Freedom and Citizenship Program was initiated in the summer of 2009 by Columbia University’s Center for American Studies, in partnership with the Double Discovery Center, an outreach organization that brings high school students to the Columbia campus for academic tutoring and college guidance. After a month-long summer seminar with Professor Roosevelt Montás, the students worked on a year-long civic engagement project that applied the ideas about freedom and citizenship debated in the seminar to a contemporary political issue. This year the students made a video-essay on Civil Rights 50 Years After the March on Washington. In it, they assess the state of civil rights in America today with a focus on three issues that they decided were the most urgent: Immigration Reform, Equity in Education, and Civil Rights in Public Spaces.
